San Diego State University's Biology Department provides outstanding degree programs led by more than 35 dedicated, research-focused faculty members. The department supports around 1,300 undergraduate Biology and Microbiology majors, 80 minors, 150 graduate students, and numerous students from other disciplines. Students can choose from a diverse range of courses covering cellular and molecular biology, ecology, evolution, and related areas. Each semester, undergraduates can select from over 50 available courses, most featuring small class sizes under 30 students or lab sections with fewer than 25 participants. The department stands out for its extensive hands-on laboratory and field course offerings compared to peer institutions. Graduate students instruct lower-division labs, while professors often lead upper-division laboratory sessions themselves.
