San Diego State University's Biology Department provides outstanding degree programs instructed by more than 35 dedicated, research-focused faculty members. We support and guide around 1,300 undergraduate Biology and Microbiology majors, 80 minors, over 150 graduate students, and numerous students from other disciplines. SDSU delivers an extensive selection of courses in cellular and molecular biology, ecology, evolution, and allied subjects. Each semester, undergraduates can choose from more than 50 courses, most with class sizes under 30 students or lab sections capped at 25. Our department stands out for offering significantly more lab and field-based courses than comparable biology programs. Graduate students lead our introductory lab courses (not undergraduates), while faculty frequently teach advanced lab sections. With our strong focus on practical lab work, hands-on learning, and research experiences, our graduates gain exceptional preparation for careers in biology, healthcare professions, or advanced academic pursuits.
