San Diego State University's Biology Department provides outstanding degree programs instructed by more than 35 dedicated, research-focused faculty members. The department supports around 1,300 undergraduate students majoring in Biology and Microbiology, 80 minors, over 150 graduate students, and numerous students from other disciplines. SDSU delivers a diverse curriculum covering cellular and molecular biology, ecology, evolution, and related areas. Each semester, undergraduates can choose from more than 50 courses, most featuring small class sizes under 30 students or lab sections with fewer than 25 participants. Unlike many institutions, SDSU's Biology Department offers an exceptional number of hands-on laboratory and field-based courses. Graduate students lead lower-division labs, while professors frequently teach upper-division labs directly. With a strong focus on practical learning, research experiences, and laboratory work, graduates gain exceptional preparation for careers in biology, healthcare professions, or advanced academic pursuits.
