The Biology Department at San Diego State University provides outstanding academic programs with instruction from more than 35 dedicated, research-focused faculty members. We support and guide around 1,300 undergraduate Biology and Microbiology majors, 80 minors, over 150 graduate students, and numerous students from other disciplines. SDSU delivers a diverse curriculum spanning cellular and molecular biology, ecology, evolution, and allied subjects. Each semester, undergraduates can choose from more than 50 courses, most featuring class sizes under 30 students or lab sections with fewer than 25 participants. Our department stands out for its extensive lab and field-based course offerings compared to peer institutions. Graduate students instruct all lower-division labs (rather than undergraduates), while faculty often teach upper-division labs directly.
With our strong focus on laboratory coursework, practical experiences, and research opportunities, our alumni gain exceptional preparation for careers in biology, healthcare fields, or advanced academic pursuits.
