Consider pursuing a microbiology major. Microbiology focuses on the examination of microscopic organisms, their behaviors, and applications. Despite their minuscule size, microorganisms—including viruses, bacteria, archaea, fungi, protozoa, and algae—are nearly ubiquitous and have a profound influence on the environment and human society. Microbes affect human health, disease, and medical treatments. They are essential in the food, pharmaceutical, and biotechnology sectors. Additionally, they play a vital role in global nutrient cycles and agriculture.
A degree in microbiology opens up diverse career paths and serves as strong preparation for graduate studies and professional programs like medical school.
