For over 100 years, San Diego State University's Department of English and Comparative Literature has cultivated profound literary and linguistic scholarship. Our curriculum empowers students to broaden their worldview and sharpen critical thinking skills through global literary studies spanning ancient texts to contemporary digital works, while equipping them for professional paths in law, business, education, tech, writing, publishing, and public service.

The department upholds SDSU's dedication to fostering an inclusive campus environment that values every individual's dignity and encourages mutual respect. The fundamental rights to learn free from discrimination, harassment, or violence against people or property form the cornerstone of our academic community.

Aspiring English teachers pursuing single-subject credentials can enroll in our interdisciplinary Language Arts program. This specialized track combines English studies with complementary coursework in communication, journalism, linguistics, and theater, meeting California's teacher certification standards. Program completers qualify for CSET exam waivers (consult the Undergraduate Director for details). This 46-unit upper-division alternative to traditional English majors prohibits course duplication across requirements.
