Saint Louis University's Master of Arts in American Studies provides students with a comprehensive foundation in the discipline's history, evolution, methodologies, and theoretical approaches, while supporting their development in independent research and scholarly writing.
The distinguished American studies faculty at Saint Louis University specialize exclusively in this field. Nearly all hold doctorates in American studies and bring extensive experience as both researchers and educators. We dedicate our teaching efforts exclusively to American studies students while maintaining collaborative relationships with faculty in related disciplines. Students may enroll in approved courses from other departments, just as students from other programs take courses in American studies.
Faculty expertise spans cultural studies, urban and regional studies, American religious traditions, musical cultures, education systems, and U.S. imperial studies. Current research focuses on the relationship between religion and mass incarceration, interracial relationships, St. Louis's role in civil rights movements, regional identity in literature, environmental humanities, indigenous studies, and late 20th-century pop culture.
