SVSU English majors can select from three specialized tracks: Literature, Creative Writing, and English Education. Each program provides deep engagement with language, narrative techniques, composition, and cultural studies. Literature students examine global literary works and the evolution of thought throughout history, fostering personal value development and cultivating analytical thinking skills. Those in Creative Writing refine their artistic abilities through intensive workshop settings, both analyzing and producing poetry and prose. This program's graduates learn to communicate the transformative potential of words and stories. The skills SVSU English students master—analytical reasoning, persuasive communication, and creative problem-solving—prepare them for various professional paths. Numerous alumni continue to advanced studies in fields such as literary criticism, writing arts, library sciences, and beyond. We require a 2.5 GPA or higher for undergraduate admission. This is based on a 4-point scale. In some cases, applicants with GPA below 2.5 may be admitted on a probational basis. Our admission team will convert your GPA to the 4-point scale, no third party evaluation is required in most cases.
