The Department of World Languages and Cultures has three primary objectives: fostering appreciation for humanistic values via foreign language, literature, and cultural studies; teaching languages as practical communication tools; and equipping students for academic pursuits and global business careers. Situated within a vibrant urban university in an increasingly international city, the department actively addresses the growing language demands of government, corporate, and professional sectors. Mastery of foreign languages and deep cultural understanding are recognized as fundamental for advanced studies across the curriculum. Beyond core language courses, students are encouraged to select complementary studies in related disciplines like additional languages, history, philosophy, arts, business, and education. Department advisors are available to help shape individualized academic pathways.
Housing the Center for International Resources and Collaborative Language Engagement (CIRCLE), the department provides comprehensive academic support through walk-in tutoring for all taught languages and digital learning tools (including software, applications, and multimedia materials). CIRCLE also organizes cultural events and language practice opportunities such as conversation groups, social gatherings, and technology workshops. This initiative aligns with the university's strategic vision to internationalize education and develop global competencies among students, faculty, and staff through world language studies.
