The Interdisciplinary Studies program offers a comprehensive education spanning the humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences. Combined with Sacred Heart University's core bachelor's degree requirements, this major prepares graduates with the essential knowledge base for effective elementary school instruction. This program is particularly suited for students interested in the Farrington College of Education & Human Development's Five-Year Program, enabling them to obtain both a bachelor's degree and a Master of Arts in Teaching while qualifying for Connecticut's elementary education teaching certification. The curriculum aligns with CT State Department of Education standards for interdisciplinary studies, offering future elementary educators a well-rounded selection of courses across disciplines including English, history, political science, geography, mathematics, and various sciences, while allowing specialization in one particular field.
The program structure includes both a Foundational Core and an Area of Concentration, ensuring students gain wide-ranging academic exposure while developing expertise in a chosen discipline. The core curriculum covers English, reading and language arts, global studies, history, political science, mathematics, and natural sciences. Students can specialize in English/arts, social studies, mathematics, or science.
Graduates focusing on English/language arts or social studies receive a Bachelor of Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies, while those concentrating on mathematics or science earn a Bachelor of Science in Interdisciplinary Studies.
