This program explores the fundamentals of speech, language, hearing, and swallowing disorders. Students will acquire foundational clinical skills and gain observation experience with practicing clinicians treating both pediatric and adult patients with communication and swallowing challenges. The Communication Disorders major can be paired with any minor for those seeking additional specialization. The curriculum incorporates diverse teaching methods including case analyses, problem-based learning strategies, collaborative education, and hands-on lab work. Clinical training fulfills ASHA's 25-hour supervised observation requirement through field placements with experienced supervisors across all SLP practice areas. Opportunities exist for community-based speech, language, and hearing screenings. As Connecticut's sole institution offering combined programs in Communication Disorders, Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, and Education, Sacred Heart University provides exceptional interdisciplinary collaboration opportunities for pre-professional students.
