The Interdisciplinary Studies major and its associated degree program offer a comprehensive exploration of humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences. Combined with Sacred Heart University's core bachelor's degree requirements, this major equips graduates with the essential knowledge base for effectively teaching elementary school subjects.
This program is particularly suited for students interested in the Farrington College of Education & Human Development's Five-Year Program, enabling them to obtain both a bachelor's degree and a Master of Arts in Teaching while earning Connecticut state certification for elementary education. The curriculum aligns with CT State Department of Education standards for interdisciplinary studies.
Tailored for future elementary educators, the Interdisciplinary Studies major offers a well-rounded selection of courses across disciplines including English, history, political science, geography, mathematics, and various sciences, while allowing specialization in one particular area.
This program ensures elementary teacher candidates gain appropriate training in core subjects like science, math, social studies, and language arts, enhancing both their expertise and self-assurance. It also thoroughly prepares students for the Praxis II examination, mandatory for elementary certification in Connecticut and elsewhere.
Through the Five-Year Program, participants can earn a BA in Interdisciplinary Studies, a Master of Arts in Teaching, and Connecticut Elementary Teaching Certification. The included internship provides valuable practical experience, giving graduates a competitive edge in the job market.
