The Bachelor of Arts in Special Education (SPED) equips future educators to support the academic and emotional development of students with various disabilities, including learning challenges, intellectual impairments, and behavioral disorders. This hands-on, field-focused curriculum trains each participant to teach inclusively across elementary, middle, and high school settings while earning Illinois' LBS1 certification. Roosevelt University's Special Education program provides K-12 through age 22 teacher certification with an LBS1 specialization, enabling graduates to instruct students with diverse special needs excluding hearing/vision impairments and speech disorders. The LBS1 certification covers multiple disability categories such as learning disabilities, cognitive impairments, emotional/behavioral disorders, autism spectrum conditions, and physical disabilities. Alongside core academic coursework, traditional Roosevelt students must fulfill specialized teaching requirements during their upperclassmen years. Through strategic scheduling, undergraduates can supplement their credentials with additional certifications like Elementary Education, Bilingual/ESL instruction, Early Childhood Special Education authorization, Middle School endorsement, or Reading Specialist qualification. Participants in the CPS AA to BA Teacher Residency Program fulfill similar requirements through a distinct pathway detailed in the program description.
