Envision the opportunities available through a top-ranked ultrasound program featuring a cutting-edge scanning facility, where expert faculty at the forefront of their profession deliver instruction. This exceptional educational journey includes a full year of hands-on clinical training, paving the way for success in the ever-evolving healthcare industry. Diagnostic medical sonography, commonly known as ultrasound, has transformed modern medicine by enabling noninvasive diagnosis, assessment, and treatment of medical conditions—without surgery, contrast agents, or radiation exposure. This safe imaging technique utilizes high-frequency sound waves to generate detailed images of internal structures, widely employed for examining the heart, circulatory system, abdominal organs, fetal development, and reproductive systems. Ultrasound's applications now extend far beyond traditional specialties, playing vital roles in emergency care, musculoskeletal medicine, sports injuries, eye health, arthritis management, pain treatment, and critical care. The field has experienced remarkable growth over two decades, with sustained demand projected for qualified sonographers due to technological advances and healthcare needs.
Our four-year diagnostic medical sonography degree, featuring a clinical internship year, places RIT among a select group of U.S. institutions offering a bachelor of science in this field.

RIT's comprehensive ultrasound curriculum builds from fundamental studies in biology, anatomy, and physiology to specialized sonography training. Students gain extensive classroom knowledge coupled with immersive scanning practice in our advanced Ultrasound Scanning Suite, mastering instrumentation and examination techniques for vascular, obstetric, gynecologic, and abdominal imaging. Following this preparation, students undertake a yearlong clinical internship across diverse healthcare environments, working alongside medical professionals to refine their skills. The program enhances technical training with coursework in patient care and liberal arts, while cultivating leadership, research, and administrative competencies. Graduates emerge as highly skilled professionals ready for sonography careers, advanced medical education, or health science graduate programs—equipped with both technical expertise and the broader skills needed in today's healthcare landscape.
