At Rice University, the New Testament and Early Christian Studies doctoral program focuses on examining the historical, literary, and archaeological evidence of early Christianity from its varied origins through the fifth century, when Augustinian Christianity became standardized. While this field has conventionally been approached as church history—often reinforcing orthodox perspectives and offering defensive stances on theological matters, Christology, women's roles, leadership structures, and identity issues—Rice's program critically reexamines this framework. It gives equal weight to all early Christian writings and artifacts, not just those aligned with orthodox traditions or their religious interpretations.
