This PhD training specialization merges social history perspectives with intellectual history methodologies. Building upon the influential History of Concepts approach from European scholarship and aligning with departmental expertise in Christianity's interplay with mainstream and alternative cultures, particularly Modern Christianity in Thought and Popular Culture, this concentration interprets diverse texts as reflections of sociopolitical and cultural evolution. A prime example in the American context is a recent thesis examining the hidden sociopolitical messages in modern dispensationalist fiction (such as the Left Behind series). The same analytical framework has been successfully employed to study elite European theology and modern media narratives, demonstrating its adaptability across contexts.
