Since its founding in 1968, the Department of Religion has stood as a cornerstone of Rice University's academic community, maintaining this distinguished legacy with pride.
Our expertise spans diverse historical religious traditions including Christianity, Islam, Buddhism, Judaism, African American Religions, and African Religions. We foster rigorous scholarship in preparing future religion scholars at both undergraduate and graduate levels. Students joining our program will tackle contemporary inquiries about human existence while examining influential texts and traditions that mold our shared future. Our research bridges scientific and artistic disciplines, focusing particularly on how meaning is constructed through interpersonal connections. Faculty members frequently explore these themes through lenses such as gender, race, sexuality, socioeconomic status, political systems, and popular culture.

Applicants from Chinese institutions can request and submit official transcripts directly through CHESICC. In general, applicants should have at least a 3.0 (B) grade point average, or the equivalent, in their undergraduate work.
The TOEFL IBT or IBT Home Edition. A minimum score of 90 is required
