Secondary school teachers are deeply enthusiastic about their disciplines and strive to share that enthusiasm with their students. Our Dual-Degree Master of Arts in Teaching program equips you with the expertise and practical skills to make a meaningful difference in the lives of middle and high school students (grades 7-12).
This accelerated five-year program allows you to earn both your bachelor's and master's degrees while qualifying for secondary teaching certification (grades 7-12). During your first year, you'll choose a specialization in biology, English, history, Spanish, or mathematics - establishing the academic foundation to teach your chosen subject. The curriculum combines advanced coursework in your discipline with essential teaching methods, covering lesson planning, classroom management, and modern educational approaches.
Your journey begins with ED 140: Introduction to Public Education, a 1-credit course that orients you to the teaching profession. This introductory class helps you understand educational pathways, certification requirements, state regulations, and explores both historical and contemporary issues in education.
During your second year, you'll take core courses focusing on educational diversity and philosophy. These classes offer valuable opportunities to connect with faculty and participate in School of Education activities. A formal academic review occurs in spring semester, where faculty assess your progress. Maintaining a 3.0 GPA and demonstrating continued commitment to teaching will allow you to advance in this 4+1 dual-degree program.
