During their MFA studies in playwriting, students engage with performance theory, dramatic literature, script analysis, and theater history. The three-year curriculum explores five key components:
Weekly collaborative short playwriting exercises culminating in 3-5 minute script-in-hand performances.
A first-year seminar examining playwriting structures and theories through a two-part course that yields a complete full-length play by year's end.
Workshops progressing from first-year full-length play readings to advanced workshops in years two and three dedicated to developing complete theatrical works.
Weekly professional development sessions with the program director addressing both creative growth and the practical aspects of playwright careers.
The New Plays Festival, where first- and second-year students present staged readings of thesis works with actors and directors, while third-year students mount full productions of their completed plays.
SIU's Theater graduate program delivers highly focused, advanced training across six disciplines. Over three years, students gain practical expertise in their chosen specialization, emerging as skilled professionals in their field.
Our faculty members maintain active involvement in local and national theater communities, bringing valuable industry perspectives to instruction. Committed to nurturing creativity and academic excellence, the MFA theater program strives for educational distinction, meaningful artistic contributions, and service to both the university and broader theater community.
