Purdue University's School of Aeronautics and Astronautics stands as one of the country's premier aerospace engineering programs, securing 5th place in U.S. News and World Report's rankings for graduate aerospace programs. A significant contribution from alumnus Ernest Gambaro and his wife Monica established an endowment to name the school's graduate program. On December 7, 2018, Purdue's Board of Trustees officially approved the designation as the Gambaro Graduate Program of Aeronautics and Astronautics.

Propulsion studies focus on understanding and designing aerospace propulsion systems, encompassing both air-breathing engines and rocket propulsion units. This field examines internal flow gas dynamics, thermodynamics, and combustion processes in depth. Key engine components like inlets, pumps, compressors, combustion chambers, turbines, and nozzles receive thorough analysis. The curriculum explores various air-breathing engines including turbojets, turbofans, ramjets, turboprops, and scramjets. Additionally, it covers rocket propulsion systems such as solid rocket boosters, liquid-fueled engines, hybrid rockets, along with nuclear, electric, and innovative nonchemical propulsion technologies.
