In the 21st century, humans and machines are engaging through novel forms of interaction. This makes design a crucial component of engineering research at Purdue, where optimal standards for mechanical systems, computational frameworks, and ergonomic design are explored. One Purdue laboratory employs toys and video games to investigate creative processes in the age of smartphones. Meanwhile, another research group examines materials at the nanoscale to identify optimal methods for producing future nanomaterials. A different lab contrasts conventional manufacturing with open-source approaches, charting innovative models for both social and technical frameworks. Design also enhances and collaborates with other engineering disciplines such as biomechanics, robotics, manufacturing, and automotive engineering. To construct anything successfully, proper design must come first.
