Family and consumer sciences educators empower youth to develop self-sufficiency, take on responsibilities in their families and communities, and thrive in their careers. The Family and Consumer Sciences Education program equips future professionals to teach subjects related to personal and family wellbeing. The curriculum includes diverse coursework covering human growth, food science, clothing and design, money management, and related disciplines.
Practical learning opportunities come through internships at educational institutions and community organizations. The program's pinnacle is a full-semester teaching practicum, where students instruct in both middle and high school settings.
This major is housed within the Department of Human Development and Family Studies, with facilities in Hanley Hall and Fowler House. HDFS undergraduates benefit from rigorous academics, individualized support, and hands-on professional preparation.
