Purdue's art education program equips students with extensive knowledge of visual arts and the passion to share this knowledge with others. The curriculum offers a strong liberal arts foundation along with focused training in studio arts, lesson planning, instructional methods, and effective communication.
Courses strike a balance between theoretical knowledge and practical skills essential for future educators. Learners can pursue either a general visual arts track or a concentration in applied design.
Entry into and completion of the Teacher Education Program (TEP) is mandatory.
Under faculty guidance, students gain hands-on experience through school observations during the program. The final year also involves teaching in a Saturday enrichment program for talented youth.
This degree fulfills all state and national certification requirements, holding accreditation from Indiana and recognition from the National Association of Schools of Art and Design. While teaching is a common career path, graduates also excel in supervisory, administrative, and leadership positions within art education.
The program appeals to those passionate about art and working with diverse populations. Alumni frequently teach in various educational environments including K-12 schools, museums, and other cultural institutions.
