Our graduate program seeks to cultivate interest, expertise, and academic inquiry focused on Russia, Slavic Central Europe, and Eurasia, with an emphasis on cultural humanities. We encourage students to pursue innovative scholarly directions after establishing a solid foundation in Russian literary traditions, exposure to key theoretical frameworks, and opportunities for international research. (Note: The Slavic Linguistics program is no longer available.)
The Ph.D. program spans five years, with full-time coursework during the initial two years, drawing from departmental and interdisciplinary offerings. Students typically complete comprehensive exams early in their third year. Subsequent paths diverge, with many balancing dissertation work with teaching responsibilities. (While stipends aren't teaching-dependent, students must teach introductory Russian at some stage and are advised to lead literature discussion sections.) Some candidates dedicate terms or years to overseas dissertation research, ideally supported by external grants, though university funds may assist when faculty endorse essential unfunded projects.
Early-stage students often dedicate summers to exam preparation or language immersion, while post-exam scholars typically focus on advancing their dissertation research and writing.
