The Slavic Department aims to cultivate in its majors a thoughtful understanding of Russian and Slavic literature and culture. Students should gain thorough knowledge of the historical developments, artistic movements, and intellectual influences that have uniquely shaped their chosen literary tradition. Slavic majors will become skilled, analytical readers of texts. Beyond deep engagement with primary sources in their focus area, they should learn theoretical frameworks and effective critical methods for studying literature and culture. Since language skills are essential, the Department requires students to achieve proficiency enabling them to use both primary and secondary materials in their target language. This linguistic ability should allow students to grasp the nuances of artistic language in literature and engage with complex critical and theoretical writings.

Academic record is evaluated within the context of your educational system and school curriculum. If English is not your native language and you are attending a school where English is not the language of instruction, you must take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), the International English Language Testing System Academic (IELTS Academic) or the Pearson Test of English Academic (PTE Academic). You are not required to take the TOEFL, IELTS or PTE Academic if English is your native language or if you have spent at least three years at a secondary school where English is the primary language of instruction.
