Our vocal performance program provides Bachelor of Music (BM) and Master of Music (MM) degrees to equip performers and educators for diverse career paths. Our internationally acclaimed faculty possesses deep expertise in professional vocal performance along with theoretical knowledge of voice techniques and teaching methods.
The BM degree establishes essential groundwork for students aiming to continue with an MM degree at SIU. Highly skilled classical vocalists holding an undergraduate music degree can leverage this advanced program to excel as solo artists or ensemble members across opera, musical theater, and choral performances.
The thorough MM curriculum additionally covers vocal pedagogy, repertoire, music history, theory, and research methods, offering scholarly preparation for vocalists pursuing teaching careers in public or private institutions, or academic positions in collegiate vocal performance programs.

Qualification Requirements
2.7 (on a grading scale with 4.0=A, approximately a B- average) on the last two years of Bachelor's coursework, 3.0 on all previous graduate work (approximately a B average). An applicant was awarded a Master's degree at an accredited college/university in the United States and has been in residence in the United States continuously prior to application to SIU (not out of the country for more than one calendar year). You have a minimum of 60 graded (A, B, C) hours of recent coursework completed at an accredited college / university in the United States with continuous residence in the United States prior to application at SIU. Pass / Fail, Satisfactory / Unsatisfactory, or Proficiency credit is not acceptable. The English language requirement may be met by submitting: 550 on the paper-based TOEFL, 80 on the internet-based TOEFL, 6.5 on the IELTS
Each path of advanced music studies is as unique as the individual artist. To be considered for acceptance into the Master of Music program at SIU you must complete the applications required by both the university and the School of Music. As a prospective student you must also schedule an audition, after making contact with an academic advisor, to determine the appropriate way to proceed based on your degree and musical background.

For non-vocalists: Two (2) letters of recommendation are required from past teachers and/or music professionals who know your work and can assess your potential for scholarly and creative work at the graduate level.
For vocalists. Two (2) letters are required. One (1) from your current voice teacher and one(1) from an ensemble/stage director.
