The Bachelor of Science in Social Work (BSW) equips students for entry-level practice across diverse professional environments while also laying the foundation for advanced studies. Graduates from accredited BSW programs typically qualify for accelerated admission into Master of Social Work (MSW) programs, potentially completing their graduate degree in just one additional year. Portland State University's Social Work Program is dedicated to developing bachelor-level practitioners who apply professional knowledge, competencies, and ethical principles to improve quality of life for individuals, families, groups, and communities while advancing social and economic justice at local, national, and international levels.
The program specifically focuses on preparing students to:
Engage in comprehensive practice across all social system levels throughout human development
Develop professional identity encompassing ethical standards, appropriate conduct, communication proficiency, self-reflection, and wellness practices
Analyze and influence research, policies, and service delivery methods
Function effectively in multicultural settings
Advocate for human rights and equitable social conditions
Pursue advanced academic studies
Meet professional certification requirements
High School Academic Records: A minimum GPA (grade point average) of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale (or equivalent) in high school and have earned a high school diploma
International College/University Academic Records: A minimum GPA of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale (or equivalent) in an accredited international post-secondary institution (college/university)
U.S. College/University Academic Records: A minimum GPA of 2.0 on a 4.0 scale (or equivalent) if transferring from an accredited U.S. college with at least 24 credit hours (approximately one year of college work)
English Language Requirement
TOEFL score of at least 68 (iBT) is required. In addition, a minimum score of 15 is required in each section (internet).
IELTS: Overall score of 6.0 with a minimum score of 5.0. in each band of the IELTS is required. If a lower score is earned in any of the five band scores, the overall score cannot be accepted.
PTE: Overall score of 47.
Application Deadline: Fall Semester – June 1st, Spring Semester – October 15th.
