Pittsburg State University's Automotive Technology Department provides a two-year Automotive Service Program featuring hands-on instruction in small classes led by experienced, accomplished professors. This associate's degree program is fully accredited by the National Automotive Technicians Education Foundation (NATEF) and offers two pathways: a two-year Associate of Applied Science degree and a two-year certificate option. The AAS program trains automotive diagnostic technicians for careers in service centers and dealerships, holding MAST (Master Automotive Service Technology) accreditation from NATEF to ensure the highest educational standards. The curriculum requires 64 credit hours total, with 50 dedicated to automotive service technology courses—including seven summer credit hours focused on transmissions—and 14 in general education. This coursework is essential preparation for the Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) examinations, and students are encouraged to take all eight major ASE certification tests after completing relevant courses. Classes are intentionally limited to an average of 25 students, ensuring practical learning with nationally recognized faculty. The program's advanced automotive labs span 32,000 square feet and feature over 40 donated vehicles from industry partners, allowing students to work with current workplace tools and technologies. Students must purchase their own tools, as future employers will require this, and can do so at the annual Tool Show held on the first Wednesday of the Fall semester.
