Merritt College's Sociology program equips students with comprehensive knowledge about societal structures, ranging from individual interactions to large-scale institutional operations. The curriculum covers essential sociological theories, concepts, and research methodologies applicable across diverse fields including business, politics, criminal justice, healthcare, agriculture, and communications. This foundation prepares students for sociology-related careers or advanced studies toward a Bachelor's degree in Sociology or related social sciences.
The AA-T in Sociology serves as an ideal starting point for students planning to continue their social sciences education at CSU or UC institutions. Sociology students benefit from learning fundamental principles in a supportive setting with small class sizes, gaining the confidence, theoretical understanding, and practical abilities needed for upper-division coursework.
This program also offers valuable preparation for students entering other humanities and social science disciplines at four-year universities.
Degree requirements incorporate coursework in Psychology, Administration of Justice, Anthropology, and African American Studies, alongside core sociology classes taught through an interdisciplinary lens that links sociological ideas to other academic fields.
Students earn the AA-T in Sociology after successfully completing both the college's General Education requirements and the program's specific degree requirements.
