This research-focused degree is designed for students planning to conclude their education at this level or continue toward a Ph.D. An M.S. or equivalent qualification typically serves as the entry requirement for the Soil Science Program's doctoral track.
Regardless of whether students pursue terminal studies or doctoral preparation, the M.S. program aims to:
deepen scientific knowledge beyond undergraduate levels
develop essential research competencies
While M.S. candidates are at the early stages of their research journey and typically need substantial mentorship in selecting and conducting thesis projects, they should emerge with the ability to conduct independent investigations.
Beyond the Graduate School's standard M.S. requirements, the department mandates six credits of 400- or 500-level coursework in either a minor or general studies concentration.
Each student will work with an appointed advisory committee that may establish additional coursework or requirements. Completion of the M.S. degree requires a thesis grounded in field or laboratory research.
Applicants for the M.S. degree must have a baccalaureate degree including 76 credits of basic and applied natural sciences.
