The Department of Astronomy and Astrophysics boasts one of the nation's most extensive and successful graduate programs. Our students undergo rigorous training designed to equip them for professional paths in academia, public education initiatives, and the private sector.
The Astronomy and Astrophysics graduate curriculum readies students for careers in space science, astronomical research, and educational fields. We offer comprehensive instruction and research opportunities spanning theoretical studies, observational astronomy, and instrumental development. Current theoretical research focuses on high-energy astrophysics (encompassing neutron star theory, black hole dynamics, and gamma-ray burst mechanisms), cosmological relativity, stellar system evolution, and advanced computational techniques. Observational research includes spectroscopic and photometric analysis of distant quasars, galaxy formation studies, intergalactic medium investigations, gamma-ray burst monitoring, X-ray and optical observations of active galactic nuclei, nearby galaxy stellar population analysis, infrared examinations of brown dwarfs and protoplanetary systems, and exoplanet detection through spectroscopic methods. Instrumentation development covers X-ray telescope technology, precision optical spectrographs, and near-infrared detection systems. Faculty members collaborate with multiple interdisciplinary university centers: the Astrobiology Research Center, Center for Astrostatistics, Center for Exoplanets and Habitable Worlds, and the Institute for Gravitation and the Cosmos.
