The Master of Music Education (M.M.E.) program offers advanced coursework in music pedagogy, learning theories, and reflective teaching practices. Students must complete one year of full-time study at the University Park campus, with the entire program typically finished within one academic year plus two summer terms. Degree completion involves 30 credit hours of coursework and a culminating action research project resulting in a publishable-quality paper, followed by an oral defense. This final presentation, which includes faculty questioning about the candidate's research and coursework, serves as the comprehensive exam. A minimum of 20 credits must be taken at University Park, with at least 18 credits at the 500-level or above.
The School of Music requires the completion of a recognized baccalaureate degree in music or music education, with a junior/senior grade-point average of 2.80 or higher (on a 4.00 scale). Admission to the M.M.E. program requires the completion of 12-15 credits in music education methods at the undergraduate level and successful teaching or student teaching experience.
