The Master of Biotechnology program is a joint initiative between the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and the Huck Institutes of the Life Sciences. This interdisciplinary program brings together faculty from various Penn State departments along with specialized advisors from academia and industry. The curriculum provides comprehensive education in both the scientific foundations and practical applications of biotechnology. Through cutting-edge, experiential learning methods, students gain expertise in biotech science, business considerations, legal frameworks, and associated ethical concerns. The program also emphasizes developing key professional competencies like teamwork and communication—skills highly valued in industrial settings—through required coursework and activities.
The program is appropriate for students with a baccalaureate degree in biological sciences, chemistry, or engineering or other baccalaureate degrees that include sufficient credits from relevant courses in the life sciences. Applicants must have a minimum junior/senior grade point average of 3.00 (on a 4.00 scale).
English Proficiency: TOEFL Internet-based test (iBT) - a total score of 80 with a 19 on the speaking section for the internet-based test (iBT); TOEFL Paper-based test - the minimum acceptable score is 550; IELTS - The minimum acceptable composite score for the IELTS Academic Test is 6.5.
