Students passionate about translation and critical translation studies will explore diverse languages and faculty research areas within this central theme of comparative literature. Many of our professors specialize in translation studies or actively work as translators. For example, Jonathan Abel has rendered Japanese critical essays into English, such as Hiroki Azuma's Otaku, while Thomas Beebee recently translated Kafka's Leopards by Brazilian writer Moacyr Scliar and is now working on Joo Guimares Rosa's final story collection. Beebee also participated in the MLA Translation Prize Selection Committee during 2020-21. Adrian Wanner authored studies on Baudelaire's Russian reception and translingual Russian authors, in addition to translating extensively from Slavic languages into German. Brian Lennon researches multilingual literature, and Caroline Eckhardt is preparing a scholarly edition of the Middle English Castleford's Chronicle. Our graduate students have published translations from Arabic, Chinese, Portuguese, and more. Faculty and students collaborate on translation symposiums, translation slams, and oversee dissertation projects involving translation, including those centered on practical translation work. Program alumni have established successful careers as literary translators and language professionals.
