The Intercollege Graduate Degree Program (IGDP) in Materials Science and Engineering at Penn State provides Ph.D. candidates with personalized faculty guidance from both the Materials Science and Engineering Department and other units within the College of Engineering and Eberly College of Science. With over 80 faculty advisors supporting more than 180 doctoral students, the program attracts graduates from diverse backgrounds including materials science, metallurgy, ceramics, polymers, physics, chemistry, and various engineering disciplines. Participants can take foundational courses through the Materials Science and Engineering Department while also selecting from a wide array of electives across the university. Additionally, students gain access to cutting-edge research facilities managed by the Materials Research Institute and other specialized labs.
Applicants with baccalaureate degrees in the physical sciences and engineering with a Junior/Senior grade point average of 3.2/4.0 or higher will be considered for admission.
English Proficiency: TOEFL Internet-based test (iBT) - a total score of 80 with a 19 on the speaking section for the internet-based test (iBT); TOEFL Paper-based test - the minimum acceptable score is 550; IELTS - The minimum acceptable composite score for the IELTS Academic Test is 6.5.
