The graduate program enables students to earn a Ph.D. by exploring German-speaking nations' literatures and cultures from the 1700s to modern times. Advanced seminars investigate: analytical perspectives on German literary and artistic traditions, Holocaust studies, cinema and visual culture, Asian-German connections, Germany's imperial and colonial past, as well as philosophical aesthetics. Participants may also enroll in Penn State's dual-title Visual Studies doctorate. Faculty involved in Visual Studies can be found here. The German department fosters a rigorous academic setting that promotes cross-disciplinary scholarship. Doctoral candidates develop expertise in German thought while engaging with worldwide perspectives. The department collaborates extensively with Comparative Literature, Philosophy, History, Jewish Studies, Women's Gender and Sexuality Studies, and Art History programs.
