Biomaterials science explores the creation and application of designed materials to regulate biological processes and enhance wellness. Utilizing the outstanding materials science facilities at Penn State's Materials Research Institute, faculty in the Biomedical Engineering (BME) department have exceptional capabilities for conducting biomaterials studies.

Our BME researchers also apply their knowledge of cellular-material interfaces and biomaterial fabrication to pioneer innovative drug administration and biological imaging technologies. Current investigations span cutting-edge fields like immune system engineering and immunotherapy, where immune cells are either mobilized to fight illnesses or adapted as targeted medication transporters.
