The Art Education Ph.D. program equips students to emerge as pioneering scholars, knowledgeable instructors, and influential figures within academia, K-12 schools, community organizations, and museum settings. Penn State offers the advantages of a major research institution while maintaining an intimate, collaborative atmosphere where faculty and peers work together to advance the discipline of art education.
The curriculum encompasses art education studies alongside complementary fields like philosophy, curriculum design, sociology, anthropology, and other areas, establishing essential theoretical and research foundations for doctoral projects. Degree candidates must fulfill 32 graduate credits (with 20 credits in art education), successfully complete their Qualifying Exam, English Proficiency Exam, Comprehensive Exam, Final Defense, and present an original dissertation.
Penn State's School of Visual Arts art education faculty firmly supports the Black Lives Matter movement, Disability Justice initiatives, Reproductive Justice advocacy, and the Women, Life, Freedom campaign. Qualification Requirements

For admission to the Graduate School, an applicant must hold a degree from an officially recognized degree-granting institution in the country in which it operates. Degree must be a: Baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited U.S. institution or Tertiary (postsecondary) degree that is deemed comparable to a four-year bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited U.S. institution.

English Proficiency: TOEFL Internet-based test (iBT) - a total score of 80 with a 19 on the speaking section for the internet-based test (iBT); TOEFL Paper-based test - the minimum acceptable score is 550; IELTS - The minimum acceptable composite score for the IELTS Academic Test is 6.5.
