The Special Education program centers on a comprehensive clinical teaching approach. Both coursework and hands-on training emphasize recognizing and addressing diverse educational and behavioral challenges faced by students with disabilities aged 3 to 21. All participants must complete foundational Special Education classes that build essential skills in assessment, recognition, instructional material creation, teaching techniques, application, and progress monitoring.
This concentration emphasizes educational theories and practices, classroom and behavior management, plus creating specialized learning resources for students with mild to profound disabilities. The curriculum equips future special educators to effectively serve children in early intervention programs and K-12 special education settings.

Qualification Requirements
The majority of Penn State’s applications come from traditional, first-year students. The following types of students are considered first-year applicants (or freshman applicants, as some refer to them): Current high school student in his or her senior year; Student who has earned a high school diploma or a GED and has no post-secondary coursework; Student who has attempted 17 or fewer credits (semester hours) of college coursework at a regionally accredited college/university before attending Penn State; Current high school student who may have enrolled in another institution(s) before graduating from high school (dual enrollment); Student who may have attended Penn State on a nondegree basis.
