The mining sector accounts for approximately 15% of the U.S. economy and 25% of the global economy. Essential mined materials are vital components in food production, manufacturing, construction, and energy generation. Annually, each individual in the U.S. relies on an average of 38,500 pounds of newly extracted minerals to support their daily life and activities. The bulk of these resources comes from over 14,000 mines located across the United States.

Mining engineers are responsible for obtaining the materials essential for societal needs while also protecting the environment. They tackle distinctive engineering problems, often working outside traditional offices at surface or underground mines, or in offices using advanced technology and simulations to devise solutions. Globally, mining operations produce over 100 different commodities utilized in almost every industry. As the saying goes, if it isn't grown, it must be mined. The United Nations has outlined 17 objectives in its "2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development," and minerals—including 50 designated as 'critical' by the U.S. government—are key to meeting many of these goals. These minerals are necessary for uses such as the shift to clean energy, aerospace, and defense. Therefore, mining engineers play a central role in advancing the economy, environment, and society.
