Mining engineering stands out as one of the most comprehensive engineering fields, producing adaptable problem solvers. The program aims to equip students with the skills needed to execute core mining engineering functions: planning, designing, operating, and decommissioning mines. Coursework is carefully chosen to achieve these goals. Foundational concepts in mine planning, operations, and closure are expanded upon in specialized mining methods classes. Advanced mine design principles are taught in dedicated design courses. The engineering fundamentals supporting mine operations are covered across multiple disciplines, including thermodynamics, electrical systems, fluid mechanics, and material strength. The curriculum culminates with a comprehensive mine feasibility study, serving as the senior capstone design project.
Program participants will develop:
the capability to recognize, analyze, and resolve challenging engineering issues using engineering principles, scientific concepts, and mathematical applications
the skill to create engineering solutions that address specific requirements while accounting for public safety, health considerations, and broader societal, environmental, cultural, and economic impacts
effective communication skills for diverse audiences
an understanding of ethical obligations in engineering practice and the ability to make reasoned decisions that evaluate the worldwide consequences of engineering solutions
the capacity to collaborate successfully in teams, demonstrating leadership, fostering inclusive environments, setting objectives, and achieving goals
the proficiency to design experiments, evaluate results, and reach sound engineering conclusions
the ability to continuously learn and apply new knowledge through effective learning approaches
