The Department of Geography at Penn State's College of Earth and Mineral Sciences provides a robust combination of human, physical, and methodological elements that form the foundation of the geography program. Students can tailor their education by pairing geography with other disciplines, selecting from a diverse array of subjects to match their personal academic goals. The department offers undergraduate geography degrees through both Bachelor of Science (BS) and Bachelor of Arts (BA) tracks. Each program delivers a comprehensive curriculum where students master core principles in physical and human geography while gaining expertise in qualitative analysis, spatial techniques, and geospatial technologies.
Unlike the more general liberal arts-focused B.A., the Bachelor of Science (B.S.) program concentrates on specialized geographical training, prioritizing technical competencies and comprehensive preparation across both human and physical geography domains. This track features intensive instruction in geographic tools and technologies, alongside foundational and advanced coursework examining human-environment interactions and the spatial organization of economic, social, and political systems across the globe.
The majority of Penn State’s applications come from traditional, first-year students. The following types of students are considered first-year applicants (or freshman applicants, as some refer to them): Current high school student in his or her senior year; Student who has earned a high school diploma or a GED and has no post-secondary coursework; Student who has attempted 17 or fewer credits (semester hours) of college coursework at a regionally accredited college/university before attending Penn State; Current high school student who may have enrolled in another institution(s) before graduating from high school (dual enrollment); Student who may have attended Penn State on a nondegree basis.
