This interdisciplinary program offers students a comprehensive understanding of medieval civilization. While focusing primarily on European history from the 5th to 16th centuries, it incorporates a global viewpoint with special emphasis on the Near East and Pacific regions.
Medieval Studies spans diverse time periods and geographic areas as an interdisciplinary domain. Commonly perceived as the thousand-year era between classical antiquity's decline and the Renaissance's emergence, the Middle Ages actually gave rise to many modern concepts. Foundational ideas like personal identity, romantic marriage, governmental systems, and national languages as cultural symbols originated during this period. Moreover, medieval influences continue to inspire creative works in 19th-20th century arts and literature, as well as contemporary digital media.

Qualification Requirements
The majority of Penn State’s applications come from traditional, first-year students. The following types of students are considered first-year applicants (or freshman applicants, as some refer to them): Current high school student in his or her senior year; Student who has earned a high school diploma or a GED and has no post-secondary coursework; Student who has attempted 17 or fewer credits (semester hours) of college coursework at a regionally accredited college/university before attending Penn State; Current high school student who may have enrolled in another institution(s) before graduating from high school (dual enrollment); Student who may have attended Penn State on a nondegree basis.
