The history program provides courses enabling all University students to enhance their knowledge and appreciation of how the United States, Latin America, Asia, and Europe have evolved. These classes help students sharpen their abilities in reading, listening, analytical thinking, writing, communication, and research. The curriculum presents interconnected views of political, social, economic, cultural, and military influences that have molded cities, states, nations, regions, and continents. The history major caters to students who want deeper historical insight, teacher certification for grades 4-8 or secondary education, or preparation for careers in public history and advanced studies in humanities and law. Utilizing materials from the Special Collections and Archives Department along with other library resources, the program also provides graduate-level courses for those pursuing a Master of Arts in History. History majors select between two paths: Historical Studies or Public History. While sharing nearly identical core requirements, these tracks differ in their upper-level elective focus. Both require completing at least 33 semester hours of history courses, with 27 being upper-division. The Core Curriculum Program mandates six additional lower-division U.S. history credits. The College of Liberal Arts also requires history students to complete at least 6 hours of foreign language study. Those considering graduate school should take extra courses to develop foreign language skills and/or statistical proficiency.
