Using a biopsychosocial approach, the Clinical Psychology PhD program with a Health Care Emphasis equips you for a successful career as either a clinical researcher or practitioner-researcher. You'll develop expertise in psychological evaluation, treatment methods, preventive care, and advisory services applicable to both psychiatric and medical environments. The program emphasizes the interconnectedness of psychological and physical wellbeing throughout life, while addressing racial, ethnic, and cultural factors that influence health risks and inequities - all core components woven throughout the curriculum.
Structured around the scientist-practitioner model, this PhD program delivers comprehensive education in both clinical psychology and clinical health psychology. Hands-on training commences immediately, starting with clinical interviewing coursework in the initial semester, followed by practical experience at the department's McShane Center for Psychological Services. During years three and four, students undertake clinical rotations at various New York-area facilities, culminating in a full-time internship year.
