The Film and Visual Studies program immerses students in exploring cinema and visual media through historical, critical, and theoretical lenses, drawing from diverse disciplines including visual culture, literature, adaptation studies, and performance theory. The curriculum examines American film history, genre analysis, worldwide contemporary cinema, literary interpretation, theories of emotion and bodily experience, and marginalized artistic expressions. This interdisciplinary program encourages students to enroll in relevant courses from the School of Language, Culture, and Society. Extracurricular opportunities feature collaborations with Darkside Cinema, a local independent theater, hosting screenings and special events like the yearly Oregon State International Film Festival. Graduates gain preparation for careers and advanced studies in visual arts fields. Faculty members regularly publish with leading academic publishers and contribute to prestigious journals in the discipline.
