This program equips counselors for professional work across various environments. The curriculum focuses on essential counseling and human development topics, such as techniques for individual and group therapy, ethical and professional considerations in counseling, core principles of the profession, counseling ethics, assessment methods, lifespan and career growth, counseling research, and sociocultural factors. On-campus students can choose between two concentrations: Clinical Mental Health Counseling or School Counseling, while online students specialize exclusively in Clinical Mental Health Counseling. The program holds accreditation from the Council for the Accreditation of Counseling and Related Programs (CACREP).
Graduates of the Clinical Mental Health specialization fulfill the educational prerequisites for Virginia's Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) certification.
Those completing the School Counseling specialization qualify for Virginia's Licensed School Counselor credential.
School Counseling graduates who take additional coursework in diagnosis, addiction, and family systems may simultaneously meet the requirements for both LPC and Licensed School Counselor credentials.
