Our Ph.D. program offers students the chance to conduct cutting-edge research across diverse physics disciplines. During the initial two years, participants build a comprehensive physics foundation through core courses, departmental seminars, and hands-on research preparation. With this foundational knowledge, doctoral candidates then join specialized research teams, working closely with faculty members whose expertise covers numerous physics specialties. Our department has been recognized by the University for national distinction, benefiting from Old Dominion's strategic location (just 30 minutes away) from both the renowned Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility (TJNAF), a global leader in nuclear physics, and NASA Langley Research Center. The recent completion of our Physical Sciences Research Building further expands research possibilities for both graduate and undergraduate students. World-class faculty provide exceptional mentorship opportunities for all motivated students seeking research involvement.
