The Department of Mathematics and Statistics provides undergraduate programs culminating in a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics degree. Students may choose from four specialized majors: Applied Mathematics, Statistics/Biostatistics, Actuarial Mathematics, or Big Data Analytics. Additionally, the department offers a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics with Teaching Licensure for aspiring secondary school mathematics educators, leading to Virginia state teaching certification. The Applied Mathematics track prepares students for graduate studies or careers in mathematical fields, while the Statistics/Biostatistics concentration focuses on advanced statistical studies and careers, particularly in biostatistics. The Actuarial Mathematics program specifically targets students interested in actuarial science, financial mathematics graduate programs, or quantitative careers. The Big Data Analytics major equips students for careers solving complex, large-scale problems across various sectors or pursuing advanced studies in data analytics. Teaching certification can be combined with any major, satisfying the university's upper-division general education Option C requirement. Note that pursuing two majors within the department generally doesn't fulfill Option A requirements, except for the Applied Mathematics and Statistics/Biostatistics combination.
