The computer engineering curriculum offers a wide-ranging engineering education with thorough grounding in the technical fundamentals of computing. The program combines electrical engineering courses covering hardware components with computer science classes focusing on software development. Students utilize hardware description languages introduced in their second year to gain expertise in designing, testing, and synthesizing sophisticated digital circuits. The ECE department operates specialized research labs in areas including Applied Plasma Technology, Cybersecurity, Communications and Networking Innovation, Microelectronics and Thin Film Devices, Medical Imaging and Analysis, Power Systems Research, Metabolic Physiology Systems, General Systems Research, Photovoltaics, and Computer Vision.
ECE professors contribute to University research hubs like the Applied Research Center, Frank Reidy Center for Bioelectrics, and Virginia Modeling, Analysis, and Simulation Center.
Regional research partners collaborating with ECE faculty include the National Institute of Aerospace, NASA Langley Research Center, and Jefferson Laboratory in the Hampton Roads area.
